South Sudan, officially the Republic of South Sudan, a landlocked country in eastern Central Africa with a population of 12,118,379 inhabitants, as of the last year census, and a territory of 644,329 square kilometers, whose capital and largest city is Juba, gained its independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011. This separation was provoked by the British colonial policy in Sudan which emphasized the development of the Arab north and ignored the Black African south.
Earlier, Sudan was occupied by Egypt under the Muhammad Ali dynasty and was ruled as an Anglo-Egyptian condominium until 1956 when the country achieved its independence.
