Mozambique, officially the Republic of Mozambique with a population of around 34,777,605 million, as of 2024, and a total area of 801,590 km2 , whose capital and largest city is Maputo, was visited by European citizens for the first time through the voyage of Vasco da Gama in 1498, and in the 1505 the Portuguese started a gradual process of colonization.
Mozambique gained independence in 1975, but from 1977 till 1992, a civil war weakened the country. Mozambique, one of the poorest and most underdeveloped countries in the world, is divided into ten provinces which are sub-divided into 129 districts. In 2010-2011, two companies, the Texas-based US corporation Anadarko Petroleam and the Rome-based Eni, discovered the Mamba South gas field, containing recoverable reserves of 4,200 billion cubic metres (150 trillion cubic feet) of natural gas in the Rovuma Basin which could make Mozambique one of the largest producers of liquid natural gas in the world.
